HMH literacy instruction provides the “how” for what students learn in science, social studies, the arts, and more. As students read and talk about texts, they will naturally build background and knowledge about grade-level cross-curricular topics and standards – Next Generation Learning Standards. HMH offers choice to all students – the power of choice can be motivating – what is interesting to one student may not appeal to another. Students access meaningful independent work and a wide variety of relevant, rich, authentic texts for independent reading to gain appropriate ownership of their learning. Students also have daily opportunities to express their understanding and thinking through productive and collaborative conversations that will help them succeed in today’s work.

• Fundations (Wilson Language Basics) – Provides students with a foundation for reading and spelling that is part of the core language arts instruction. Students, primarily in grades Kindergarten, 1, and 2, receive 30-35 minutes of daily supplemental instruction.
• Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program – Offers 24 weeks of supplemental daily explicit and systematic phonemic awareness lessons to students.
